The tradition.

Rooibos comes from Aspalathus linearis, a needle-leaved shrub that grows wild only in the rugged fynbos of South Africa's Western Cape and nowhere else on earth. Indigenous Khoisan communities gathered and brewed it from the mountain slopes long before European settlers took up the drink in the eighteenth century.

The traditional tea is made by bruising and then fermenting the cut leaves and stems, a step that turns them from green to a deep red-brown and gives rooibos its warm, faintly sweet, almost woody flavor. It is brewed and drunk much like black tea, but with none of the bitterness and none of the caffeine.

In South Africa it is an everyday drink, poured for children and adults alike at any hour of the day, precisely because it keeps no one awake. That absence of caffeine, unusual for something brewed and served like a proper tea, is much of what built its reputation at home and abroad.

It was a daily beverage first and a health product only a distant second. The bolder claims came later, and some of them ran well ahead of what the human evidence could actually support at the time.

 
 

The mechanism.

Two things about rooibos are simply true and need no trial to establish. It is genuinely caffeine-free, so it will not disturb sleep or nudge blood pressure the way caffeinated tea can, and it is very low in tannins, so it does not blunt iron absorption at the table the way strong black tea does, which makes it an easy all-day drink for most people.

The health claims beyond that are more modest, and worth stating carefully. Rooibos carries distinctive polyphenols, chiefly a compound called aspalathin, and in one controlled trial adults at cardiovascular risk who drank six cups a day for six weeks saw a small improvement in cholesterol and in markers of oxidative stress, though their blood sugar did not meaningfully budge.

The red color everyone loves comes from the very step that destroys the star compound.

That is the quiet irony: fermentation is what turns rooibos red and mellow, and it also degrades much of the aspalathin the exciting research is built on, which survives far better in the green, unfermented kind. Most of the bolder claims still come from cell and animal work, so the honest summary is a pleasant, caffeine-free tea with a modest antioxidant edge, not a remedy for anything in particular.

The how-to

Treat this as a genuinely good caffeine-free swap, and let the fancier claims stay optional.

Rooibos is cheap and everywhere, in bags or loose at most groceries for a few dollars a box, either the common red fermented kind or the grassier green rooibos. Green holds the most aspalathin, though the red is what the human trial used and what most people actually prefer to drink.
Brew it like black tea, a bag or a teaspoon per cup in just-boiled water, but steep it a good five to ten minutes, since it never turns bitter or harshly tannic. Drink it any time, including the evening, which is the main practical reason to keep it around.
The dependable payoff is a warm drink with no caffeine that will not cost you sleep or interfere with iron at meals. Any cholesterol or antioxidant benefit is a modest bonus that showed up around six cups a day, not a reason to force it down.
Rooibos is very safe for most people and low in the compounds that trouble other teas. Rare case reports link very heavy, long-term intake to liver enzyme changes, so keep it to a normal daily habit, and if you take medication, remember that any tea in large amounts can interact.
